PERSONAL GROWTH NEUROSCIENCE THEME

WHAT THIS MEANSIN THE WORKPLACE

To grow is something all human beings want and need. It might not bubble to the surface in an obvious way and our ability to grow can sometimes be held back or hidden by society.

In this context we are referring to the process of fulfilling and expressing our own wider potential. Opportunities for growth are therefore those which offer us new experiences, challenges and learning.

Personal Growth can be broken down into 3 core areas...Personal Development, Career Progression & Challenges

AREA 1:PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

We are designed to evolve and grow. Standing still results in stagnation and inflexibility.

People need opportunities to expand their experience and expose themselves to new learning. This helps us feel engaged. Experiencing novelty is an important element of keeping the brain alert.

AREA 2:CAREER PROGRESSION

Seeing our personal development journeys translate into new job responsibilities is a great source of sustainable motivation.

It provides the emotional reward that validates our efforts and keeps us on track. Taking ownership of increased or different responsibilities is a meaningful challenge that supports our sense of moving forward.

AREA 3:CHALLENGES

To maintain a sense of momentum we need to feel appropriately challenged in our roles. The key is achieving the right balance.

Feeling a little outside of our personal comfort zone is a good place for personal growth as we have to engage our wider potential to succeed. If this goes too far, we will retreat into survival mode - where we resist change and new demands.
