NEUROSCIENCE THEMES

UNDERSTANDING OUR
NEUROSCIENCE THEMES

In our model each brain system has 2 associated neuroscience themes (8 in total). The 8 themes relate back to either the brain (engagement) or the heart (happiness). Both of which are essential in driving a thriving culture.

We have 8 key neuroscience themes which are linked to our Brain Systems Model. Combined it helps us understand how people think, feel and behave. Confused? Watch the vid below to fill in ALL the gaps...

HAPPINESS THEME:SAFETY

This refers to feeling like we are in a safe environment. At work this usually means trusting our colleagues but there are other influences...

3 key areas that may affect feelings of safety in the workplace are:

  • Work Environment
  • Trust
  • Balance

HAPPINESS THEME:RELATIONSHIPS

Positive relationships sustain us emotionally and drive us at work. They need to be authentic or could easily break down.

In our model we focus on 3 different type of relationships within the workplace:

  • Personal Relationships
  • Energetic Connections
  • Team Dynamics

HAPPINESS THEME:FREEDOM

Freedom at work is usually the ability to choose our own progression path and have autonomy within our role.

Broken down further in our model we focus on these 3 all important As:

  • Acceptance
  • Authenticity

HAPPINESS THEME:ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

An area organisations regularly fall down on, acknowledgement is one of the most important human needs.

It is the feeling of being heard and an emotional validation of who we are and what we are experiencing. In the workplace we focus on 3 key areas within acknowledgement:

  • Feeling listened to
  • Recognition
  • Feedback

ENGAGEMENT THEME:MEANING & PURPOSE

Meaning is a term used to denote something of personal value and importance. It’s an internal motivator. Purpose is more of a ‘why’ question and something we can take into the world.

In the workplace we can hone in on these key areas:

  • Inspiration
  • Commitment
  • Values

ENGAGEMENT THEME:CLARITY

One of the most common mistakes we see, clarity is the simplest of our 8 themes but often an area that is underestimated in terms of importance.

It’s the ability to think without distraction and to concentrate on relevant information and tasks. In our neuroscience model we hone in on:

  • Job requirements
  • Informational flow
  • Organisational impact

ENGAGEMENT THEME:PERSONAL GROWTH

To grow is something all human beings want and need - Loosely speaking, it is the process of fulfilling our own potential.

Growth opportunities offer us new experiences, challenges and learning both inside and outside the workplace. At work we consider growth in relation to:

  • Personal development
  • Career progression
  • Challenges

ENGAGEMENT THEME:ENABLEMENT

Pointing your team in the right direction is one thing, but are you giving them the tools they need to do their job?

Having approval and the necessary resources is key for employee engagement and could easily influence whether an organisation succeeds or fails. In our neuroscience model we focus on:

  • Workload
  • Resources
  • Collaboration

Consider the flow of information in your organisation. For example too much information can overwhelm a new starter, too little information can leave them feeling isolated. Learn to love the art of information flow in your organisation as it really does make a difference to the engagement and happiness of your employees.
