SAFETY NEUROSCIENCE THEME

WHAT THIS MEANSIN THE WORKPLACE

Psychological safety in the workplace is the sense that we are in a safe environment. This particularly means the people that we interact with.

A leader’s number one job is to make their team feel safe. Implementing psychological safety is easier said than done BUT it is definitely a great place to start.

Safety can be broken down into 3 core areas...Work Environment, Trust, Balance

AREA 1:WORK ENVIRONMENT

People need to feel that their physical working environment is safe in terms of conditions or access. It also includes emotional safety, such as freedom from bullying, prejudice or psychological abuse.

We believe that some employees prefer to work from an office and some employees prefer to work from home… but 100% of employees want flexibility.

AREA 2:TRUST

People need to feel trust to be able to commit themselves emotionally to an organisation. They also need to feel trusted and be able to trust those they work with.

Our senses pick up on factors such as tension, dishonesty and insincerity - all of which can inhibit human expression and contribution. Whereas encouragement, connection and recognition will trigger our instinct to thrive.

AREA 3:BALANCE

This covers whether or not people feel that they are in a state of reasonable balance in terms of juggling their work and personal/family commitments as well as their own emotional needs.

Excessive work pressure can cause difficulties in personal relationships and will limit people’s capacity to recover their energy.

I do fundamentally agree that trust is earned. There’s the concept of the emotional bank account, and as leaders, we all open trust accounts with one another, and they're either in credit or debit. So you either do things that build trust, or you do things that erode trust.
